DIABETES AND HONEY

Can people with diabetes eat honey?

I am often asked this question. Is honey less harmful to diabetics than table sugar?

As beekeepers, we are not qualified to give medical advice. Of course, doctors can. Recently, I came across an article on this topic in a well-known German beekeeping journal, written by Professor Dr. K. Munstedt and diabetologist Dr. D. Winter.

Diabetes mellitus, or diabetes, is a very common condition. In Germany, approximately 5.7 million people suffer from this disease, which corresponds to about 7% of the total population. All statistics indicate an upward trend that will continue in the coming years. Hereby some extracts from the article "Diabetes mellitus und Honig" as it appeared in Die Biene in January 2006. Both physicians are affiliated with the university hospitals of Giessen and Marburg in Germany.
