Acaricides for beekeepers are specialized treatments used to kill or control parasitic mites, specifically the destructive Varroa destructor mite, which threatens honey bee colonies. They are divided into two main categories: synthetic chemical treatments and natural organic options.
Although organic acids are permitted for use in the treatment of bees against Varroa mites, their negative effects on the honeybee colony may be similar to that of synthetic drugs.
The use of acids in beekeeping
Oxalic acid has been used for over 20 years. It is generally applied to control varroa mites between November and January, when there is no brood. Due to its slow metabolism, oxalic acid persists in the colony for a relatively long period, sometimes until spring.
Much research therefore focuses on the lethal and sublethal effects of oxalic acid on bee colonies, particularly on their longevity, learning abilities, and the pH of their digestive system and hemolymph. Even at low concentrations, and despite improved bee hygiene, a reduction in worker activity, decreased brood rearing, and a decline in lifespan have been observed.
Researchers have found that oxalic acid treatment leads to a significant shortening of bee lifespan. Oxalic acid can reach internal organs, alter the structure of micro-organisms in the bees' digestive tract, and affect their nervous system, thus impairing their learning abilities. In summary, substances used to combat varroa mites can cause significant damage to the colony, even in cases of low infestation.
The application of oxalic acid can have long-term adverse effects on the health of both bees and beekeepers (including the formation of oxalate kidney stones and other diseases).
That's why I opted from the start for a completely natural approach : beekeeping without additives, acids, or synthetic products.
My bees are protected against varroa mites through heat treatment of their brood. No products are used on the bees or in the hives. Out of respect for the bees and all their work, I want to offer them a healthy and happy life.
